strange night last night...she cried out at 8pm, then again at about 3am...other than that, she's mostly been sleeping, well, like a baby.

we went for a walk today down montana. i was singing away, showing kaya the trees and the cars and the shadows and all that, and we were having a fine time. on the way back, apparently, the tour lost it's novelty, and my lil' daughter fell asleep on me!

when you have a child, you find that they quickly become a living reminder of the passage of time. you suddenly realize how fast life moves when not 5 months after you were at the hospital, you've got a real baby on your hands, one that laughs and smiles and looks around and rolls over. you can literally feel time moving with each little milestone, and you can suddenly see 10 years out like it's just around the next bend.
there's only one time when things slow down - when your baby is crying. i'm writing as kaya is screaming - upset over something, but we're trying the "let her comfort herself back to sleep thing", and so i'm reduced to watching her on an infrared monitor as she looks about in the darkness, looking for consolation. that's tough...tougher than i thought it could be.

i'm facing the possibility that i'll be away from my daughter for 4 days next year - sure, it's over a year away, but that's scary!

cho's mom watched kaya last night while we went out for dad's 32nd bday. kaya got me some presents - an imprint of her foot on some tiles, and a picture of me and her...surprisingly emotional to get those gifts. also got a couple cards from her, but something makes me think they may be forgeries.
just before we left, we found a new trick of kaya's - she now opens and closes her hands, seemingly imitating us! however, i later tracked her on the infrared camera doing the same thing in the dark...hmm....Comments:Add a comment:

happy halloween! kaya made her debut as "edamame" (or, more affectionately, a pea in the pod). she was joined in her first halloween by Eli the Gorilla, Jackson the Baseball Player, Abby the Ladybug, and Luke the Tiger. quite a scary bunch they all made. the strategy was to photograph all of them together on the couch, but given the inability to sit up of 4 of the 5 kids, it got a little ugly. the Ladybug fell between the pillows as the Edamame tried to bite off her antenna, the Ballplayer kept gnawing on his bat, the Tiger was asleep, and the Gorilla got a bit, well, unhappy with all the attention on the lesser mammals and veggies.
