Back To School!

March 2003

it's been a while since i've written, but that's only because we're having so much damn fun! lil' k has been perfecting a number of new tricks, including:

    - crawling: now reguarly criss-crossing rooms, venturing between textures (hardwood / carpet, for example), and plowing through obstacles

    - clapping: well, she's been clapping for a while, but i think she's now actually clapping when i clap with her. it's a veritable clapfest. we've got the clap. clap on, clap off.

    - eating: apparently, today she grabbed her sippy cup all on her own and put it to her mouth. a big deal for a girl who's primary eating activity consists of a) grabbing cheerio, b) observing how cheerio sticks to sweaty palm, c) dropping cheerio off side of table, and d) observing cheerio now on ground.

    - acting: this being LA and all, our daughter had a comparably late start in Hollywood. however, she will be filming her first full-length feature in an undisclosed Hollywood studio later this week. (really. not kidding!)

    - talking: she's definitely "dadadadadada's girl", though i'm not sure if her "dadada" is referring to the man that gave her life or that piece of cheese on her plate.

to be honest, i miss her every second that i'm away from her. we hang out every morning, getting our Iraq update while we knock over blocks and practice standing up, we collectively drool while we share a morning yogurt (did i say share? i meant, while i feed her, of course), and we have the greatest weekends eating out, playing with leaves and grass, driving around with Elmo, and, of course, making lots of raspberries.

    anyway, it's all really good.

went to the doc today...all good...he said not to worry about her little neck movements, her slightly wonky head...and then they stuck her with 3 needles. man, i hate seeing my daughter cry...i find myself overwhelmed with emotions, mostly anger and helplesses, wanting to do absolutely anything to make her better, and make her better fast.

POLICE BLOTTER 3:46PM - On the 600 block of Moreno, numerous witnesses reported seeing an infant crawling forwards on a multi-colored rug. Upon arrival, police inspected the premises but could find no forward-crawling baby, just a very cute, stationary baby. Witnesses reported seeing a baby matching that baby's description lunging forward, flailing her legs, and making slow but steady progress forward a good two feet.

sheesh, it's been too long since i've written anything. time to give y'all an update.

so we're on the cusp of some exciting developments. here they are:

CRAWLING - like Bigfoot, there have been numerous claims to having seen it in action, but no verifiable truth. What is true is that lil' K is now sitting up with ease, holding herself up against couches, and shuffling backwards (usually while she attempts to go forward).

FOOD - we're conquering new foods daily...chicken, tofu, yogurt, fruits and veggies...all without any teeth!

SMILES - Her "chinese smile" is addictive. I fear it will become permanently etched on her face if she continues to do it every five minutes, as she has been for the last few weeks.

CLAPPING - Cho claims it happened today. No independent confirmation.

PAGE TURNING - It's beyond cute when you go to read Kaya a story. You'll start reading the story, she'll go all quiet and stare intently at the page, and then she'll lean left to look around the corner at the next page. Shortly after that, she'll typically reach out and turn the page - whether you are done or not. She'll then turn the pages furiously, causing the reader to start abbreviating stories like this: "Little Red Riding Hood...Grandma...house...blown down...wolf!"

NAPPING - Ok, this is my favorite thing of all. Every morning, K and I play together from about 6 until 9. At 9, it's naptime (for both of us, though only one actually gets to sleep), so she goes into the crib. She'll roll around for about 10 minutes, and finally realizes this is sleep, not sit-up, time. However, she refuses to fall asleep unless Daddy's hand is on her chest, and her fingers are tightly holding Daddy's finger tight. I lean on the crib and watch her as she fades out, slowing releasing my finger as her hand falls to the side. That's my cue that she's asleep and I tip-toe out of the room.

    Ah, parenthood.
