we're back. phew.
cho and i had a very relaxing, sinful weekend in SF, while schmucklepants kept watch over the crib with Lolo and Lola. the first few days, we called non-stop, wanting the play-by-play on her eating, her sleeping and every activity, but eventually we settled into a calm rhythm, knowing lil' K was in good hands.
we left on thursday, and arrived home today (sunday), and it's like we missed a year of k's life. two things of particular note:
1) WALKING: well, basically, kaya evolved from a 4-legged primate to a full-blown 2-stepper in the 3 days we were gone. she walks everywhere, often with stuff in hand, and has left crawling for those little kids who aren't cool enough to hang with her. with walking comes a number of new sides of kaya:
a) GODZILLA KAYA - basically, now that she can walk means that she can move from hazardous area to hazardous area faster, and since she's standing, she's effectively doubled her vertical reach. while she can't yet slam dunk, coffee cups, sculptures, computers and plates are now within easy reach.
b) GRAVITY - gravity is a harsh mistress, and little k is learning the hard way. the plunks from knees to butt aren't so bad, given the diaper padding and the 8" drop, but the faceplants can be sucky-pooey.
2) OPINIONS: Along with her walking, lil' K seems to have decided that it's time to forcefully express her opinions...usually with an annoyed cry and a pointed finger, as in "i want that!". "that", of course, can be anything from raisins to a ceiling fan to the sun. some of those things can be hard to give my daughter, as much as i'd like to try. fortunately, she's still as A.D.D. as her dad, and she can be easily distracted.
we missed our little girl. sitting at the table at the wedding, i found myself pulling out K's picture and just marveling at this little creation, feeling joy (at her existence) and sadness (at the distance between me and her) at once.
now we're home and all is good again.Comments:Add a comment:

it just gets more fun every day. went to cho's mommy class today, as she's busy with the store and couldn't make it. as the leader talked with all the ladies about boobs and bottles, i just sat there and watched my daughter explore for over an hour. it's weird to see her so independent - she crawled away from me and over to the toys, stood up, took 10 steps, wandered off into a corner, picked up a phone and listened intently, and went up and down some steps. i watched her intently, so instinctively proud of her every little move - she's so coordinated now, navigating around the room, experimenting with everything. every 5 minutes or so she'd look over in my direction, and i'd be watching her, and she'd just smile, as if to say "hi dad!", and go back to whatever she was doing. it melts your heart. after a while, she wandered back over to me, pulled herself up on my leg, and climbed up onto my lap to play with daddy. now that's the best way to spend an afternoon. these moms got it good.
we've just entered our hellish end-of-summer wedding marathon, which will take us away from our daughter 4 times in the next 5 weeks. last weekend was smooth, with Lolo and Lola moving into Chez Hirsch and having a wonderful time with little K. this weekend is much longer - we'll be gone from Thursday until Sunday - and that much harder for us. K, meanwhile, couldn't be happier!Comments:Add a comment:

the tiniest hirsch took 15 steps yesterday on the parquet floor in santa barbara. our buddy jeremy put her on the ground, and she basically took off, walking about for the whole crowd to see before landing on her bum. very, very impressive.

it's been a while since i just plain ol' gushed about how frickin' cool my daughter is.
she's like the coolest toy you've ever played with, and she doesn't require batteries. i think we're moving into the honeymoon phase of this relationship, as she's turned into wonderful bliss. she wakes with a smile, and, perhaps more importantly, she wakes up around 6:30-7. we play, we tackle each other, we generally climb around on stuff, and make faces at each other. we take a walk for breakfast, where we both enjoy extra butter and extra syrup on our french toast. she actually looks forward to naps, and practically smiles when you put her down in her crib for some shut-eye. when she eats, she's always offering you some, or she's slurping some spagetti through her hand, or she's sucking on a straw and looking at your with puppy dog eyes. she even lies still when it's diaper-changing time, playing with her fingers until you're done with her business.
she's really ticklish, especially on the thighs and underarms, and she just loves falling backwards onto our bed. she climbs stairs with ease, and comes down backwards with a cautionary leg extended to feel for the drop-off. she keeps handing me the same picture of a clown, which makes me wonder what she thinks of her dad. she'll eat toilet paper if you leave it out, but she could care less if you simply take it away. she's been known to just start singing to herself in late afternoons, if you're walking downstairs, or anytime we're in the car.
fun fun!
