Back To School!

November 2004

we're in the thick of it now.

zade's now 1 month and 1 day old. we have, thus far, survived, with perhaps the biggest damage being the night that he exploded poop while he was sitting right on top of mommy. but then again, mommy's had poop issues of her own for a long, long time (and no, i won't tell you more than that).

these days, life moves in a coordinated cycle, as we (attempt to) slide gracefully from wakeup, through breakfast, to playdates, lunches, naps, walks, dinners and sleep. we rarely venture more than 2-3 miles from home, and we're enjoying meals and time at home as we (cho and i) never did before. even with kaya, we always found an excuse to get out, see a movie, catch dinner or just do something, but now that's infinitely harder, and that is truly a good thing.

it's a good thing because being home is comforting, and grounding. it's something i've really not experienced in so long, as a hyperactive, always running teen and 20-something. now i find myself thinking of home improvement projects and reprogramming my TiVo and (can you imagine?) actually reading.

kaya has been the coolest big sis around. zade, to her, is a fascination - she touches, prods, stares, mimics, and she is soooo dying to hold him. jealousy? nah. love, and excitement, that there's yet another fascinating toy in the house.

zade would be Chill Baby, but he's suffering through a nasty cold/allergy/oddity where he coughs and wheezes, often waking himself up, especially at night. it's not as bad as it sounds, but consistent, long, meaningul sleep is a precious gem in this house.

and me...well, the lack of sleep leaves me somewhat grumpy, and truly annihilates my already weak memory. but when i do find that rare second to step back, or appreciate the little things, it's intensely gratifying.

for example, last saturday we went to lil' k's first movie, The Polar Express. well, ok, we 'went', if 20 minutes counts. she was so excited to sit in the theater, fascinated by the lights (and then the dark), in awe of the big screen and then not-so-thrilled at the loud whistle of the train (whereupon she stood up and told the audience "ALL DONE!"). me, i spent that 20 minutes watching her, watching her senses explode with color and light, seeing her drink in these new experiences. it was the best 20 minute movie i've ever seen.
