i just put kaya to bed, and now i'm lying here in bed bummed because i don't get to see her again until sunday (cho and i are going away for our anniversary).
kaya's in her big-girl bed now, and it's one of those 8 million little signs that our little girl is getting, well, bigger. she gets in bed by herself, she tries to weasel just one more book or dance, and she runs around the room, serving tea, reading books, playing with toys. mom and i have taken a more passive role lately, as she's more content to play with herself, despite frequent orders to "push swing from back there" or "daddy read this". it's relieving, and yet it's just a bit sad - every extra inch of distance between is like a year of time gone by.
what's perhaps most wonderful about little k right now is her extremely verbose nature. i treasure our little walks from the house to the art center, where she points out the trees, the cars, the houses, the sidewalk, the snails, the bugs and the sky. who knew a single city block could have so much going on?
what's also wonderful is her rational, accomodating side. like any 2 year old, she'll insist on things, but when you explain that she can't have ice cream, or she can't touch that painting, she's surprisingly cool about it. she moves on, and directs her attention elsewhere.
these days, i often have lunch with her - i leave work and come home to a hug and some pasta...the other day, she cried when i left, and it just hurts. yet another inch of distance grows between us.
i've started to wonder what our little boy is going to look like, and if i'll feel the same way about him, and what boys are like versus girls, and what being a younger sibling is all about. i've got 1 month to ponder...Comments:Add a comment:

don't take my lack of posting as a lack of interest in my daughter.
it's more of a stunned fascination...at how much of a little girl she's become...at how independent she's becoming...at how amazingly verbose and observant she's become...
these days, lil' k likes to sing. she likes to tell you about her day, or what colors are on that ball, or what she did yesterday in the pool, or how that girl that tripped on that stair last thursday cried, or sometimes she'll just make stuff up. she cried loudly at 5AM this morning, and when cho went in to console her, she informed my wife that the 'green moon' was upsetting her.
these days, we have tea parties, we wander through streams, we prefer waffles (with butter and syrup) to french toast, we sip our daddy's iced tea, we eat jelly beans and then tell mommy so daddy gets in trouble, we dance our asses off, we flip upside down repeatedly, we tell dumb jokes and then say "that's SILLY!", we make chinese faces with our daddy, we touch tongues...
one of my favorite new activities, by far, is the shower. kaya decided a few days ago that showering with daddy is far more fun than taking boring old baths...so into the shower we go, where kaya insists we make waterfalls, then arches her back as the water runs down, then dances and runs around the shower, happy as a clam (are clams in fact happy? they don't talk much.)
she's just amazing, and more beautiful each day.
as for baby #2, this kid is boogeying...cho's belly is becoming alien-like...we're heading into a major name debate...we'll see...!Comments:Add a comment:

here's the latest hot sheet on what 2.1 year olds are into:
LITERATURE
Kaya loves books. Well, OK, Kaya loves ONE book in particular - Green Eggs & Ham. She likes this book in the morning, at night, with a fox, in a box, in the dark, in the rain - pretty much non-stop. If there was a way to make the book circular so that we never stopped reading it, she'd be in 2 year old heaven.
OVER-EXCITEMENT
Kaya gets pretty worked up sometimes, and I've learned that encouraging excitement is yet another one of those "bad daddy" things. For example, Kaya loves to run, especially in the most dangerous direction directly away from you. Stupid daddy thinks it's funny to run behind her and freak her out with heavy footsteps and shouting. Kaya then runs faster...err, too fast...and wipes out and starts crying. Bad daddy, bad.
STINKY!
Unfortunately, Kaya has become smart enough now that she can express her opinions on smells - specifically, smells from others. This means that Daddy has to brush his teeth before he gets Kaya in the AM, or else he gets a "Hi Daddy.....stinky breath", and then she wrinkles her face and holds her nose. Even worse, after a great lunch of Mexican food, Daddy's favorite pastime is no longer going undetected by lil' K.
